Bats in the Classroom

Norcal Bats in the ClassroomNorCalBats offers exciting, informative lectures on bats for Schools. These are live, in-person presentations, which include:

  • An informative PowerPoint presentation about bats.
  • A discussion of the harmful myths that surround these animals.
  • Information about the importance of bats in our environment.
  • Live bats of California native species that are presented for viewing and discussion.

All bats are certified as non-releasable by the California Department of Fish & Wildlife and the U.S. Department of Agriculture—injury precludes them from surviving the wild. The bat is projected, via movie camera, onto the wall for all to view.

We will remain after the presentation to answer questions. The presentation lasts approximately 45 minutes to one hour.

For the Safety of the Bats

  1. The bats are kept in a container until each is displayed individually.
  2. The bats have all lived in quarantined captivity prior to becoming part
    of the education program.
  3. NorCalBats is permitted by both the CA Dept of Fish and Wildlife and the USDA to have educational, non-releasable animals
  4. As per our permit, no one can be with in 6 feet of the bat when it is out of the container.
  5. No one can touch or pet the bat even through the container.

Fees For School Presentations

One-time on-site presentations for schools are available for a fee of $250.00 for a single presentation, and $60.00 for each additional presentation at the same school on the same day. We prefer one class at a time but will present to 2 classes per session. A mileage rate of $0.65 will be charged for locations over 45 miles from Davis, and bridge tolls will also be charged when appropriate.

Presentations are adapted to the school schedule but typically run about 45 – 60 minutes each.

If you are interested in booking a class presentation, know that with a few exceptions, school programs are conducted on Mondays and Fridays. See our event calendar to check date availability.  Look for “Classroom Presentation Available” highlighted in yellow. Sometimes a half day available but not the full day.  If you want the other half, please note travel time between locations.

If multiple classrooms are scheduled, I prefer not to move between presentations due to the time to set up and tear down.  If I must move, it will take 20-30 minutes between sessions.
